The Man Who Rode Midnight (Texas Tradition Series, No 14)
Published in Hardcover by Texas Christian Univ Pr (October, 1990)
Authors: Elmer Kelton and Kenneth W. Davis
Average review score:

As usual, a superb Kelton book
What makes Elmer Kelton stand out is not only his style of writing, and his subject matter (the value of which, I admit, is subjective), but the admirable qualities of his characters. In so many other books, main characters are filled with angst and cynicism, and a reader won't care if they live or die. Kelton's, though, a reader cheers on and wishes success. I've read and re-read "The Man Who Rode Midnight." The hero opposes not progress, in whatever guise, but greed, especially greed with him as the victim. He is a man who loves his life and feels pride in how he has lived, pitting his best against the best. Great.

An excellent book
What makes Elmer Kelton stand out is not only his style of writing, and his subject matter (the value of which, I admit, is subjective), but the admirable qualities of his characters. In so many other books, main characters are filled with angst, and a reader may wish they would all take gas. Kelton's, though, a reader cheers on and wishes success. I've read and re-read this one. Great.

One of Kelton's best.
For me, it was hard to choose between The Time It Never Rained and The Man Who Rode Midnight as Kelton's best. Kelton is a great novelist that brings issues concerning Texas and the west to life. This book is definitely a page turner that will keep any reader interested.

The Metsudah Chumash/Rashi
Published in Hardcover by KTAV Publishing House (June, 1997)
Author: Avram Davis
Average review score:

wonderful resource
While I am not Jewish, I have gleaned a lot from this resource. The interlinear translation style is extremely wonderful resource, esp. for people trying to pick up the language or to see the underlying Hebrew. The Rashi commentary is easy to follow. All the texts are well laid-out and extremely readable. I find the resource valuable for helping someone pick up Hebrew. The translation is more word for word than thought for thought, but that is appropriate in this context, given that it is an interlinear translation. Rashi adds valuable insights. His text being there in Hebrew and English is done just as well as the Torah text. The use of a the more readable font for the Hebrew is easier for people like me who are still picking up Hebrew. The only thing, as a Gentile, I have a struggle with in the English translation is the transliterated words as opposed to the Anglinized words. Not a big deal, just takes some getting used to. This is well worth the price, esp. for the serious student or scholar.

The best linear translation available.
This has proved to be an absolutely phenominal resource in my study of Rashi.

Firstly, the translation is simple, clean, and generally accurate. Metsudah wisely chose to be truer to the exact translation than to the "spirit." For the purpose of a linear translation, this is a tremendous benefit.

Secondly, the layout of the text is very easy to read. The top of the page has two columns of Torah: vocalized Hebrew on the right side, its translation on the left. The bottom of the page is Rashi: vocalized (and non-Rashi-scripted) Hebrew and its translation alongside. There are a number of linear translations out there, but this is by far the easiest to read.

Thirdly, Metsudah provides helpful footnotes which help clarify some of Rashi's more ambiguous statements.

Any serious student of Rashi will find this text invaluable.

(P.S. Metsudah also publishes linear translations of, among other things, the siddur, tehillim and megillot. All are worth having.)

Mestudah Chumash
This Chumash (5 Books of Moses) is an absolutely wonderful learning tool. It has the English and the Hebrew in linear form so it is very easy to use. The translation is not one of those "thy" and "thou" translations, but rather is real, understandable English. I also like that the names are transliterations of the real Hebrew names and not the Anglicized names so often encountered. In short, this is a genuine Jewish Bible (Five Books of Moses) and is great for anyone who is looking for that. As if this is not enough, it iscludes the commentary of Rashi, in the same great linear format. Rashi (he lived in 11th Century France) is one of the greatest of all Torah commentaries and explains things according to the Oral Tradition. All together, this is a great edition and I unhesitatingly recommend it for use in study of Chumash and learning Hebrew or for simply reading the Torah.

The Midnight Partner

One of the few books around which was impossible to put down
Be warned, this book is one that should deffinatly not be judged by a short paragraph on the plot. Like many astounding books, when you try and tell somebody about the story line it comes off sounding tacky or dodgy. However, do not be fooled. This book is more that sex, and suicide. When reading it you find yourself relating almost to the characters which is often a lacking quality in books. Also the plot itself and the wild twists are very unpredictable which makes it an exciting and incredible read. I'm not going to tell you about the plot because that would ruin it for you, but my advice to you is do read it. It is worth it. To those of you who have read it and enjoyed it, may i suggest you also read "Plan B, by Jonathon Tropper" and "Secret History, by Donna Tartt"

And ignore the age, i am in fact 15 but am not registered as a member of Amazon and therefore couldn't write a review.

Terrific Erotic Thriller
As the publisher of the audio book version (no longer available) of this book, I am very familiar with it and it's wonderfully, exciting and thrilling story. Once you pick it up you won't be able to put it down. It's got sex, plot, characterization, sex, and a fantastic ending...I always thought it would make a terrific movie.

One of the best I've ever read!
This book has it all. Suspense, action, sex, and love. As a big fan of Clancy, I usually read political thrillers, but this book make me a huge fan of psychological thrillers also. The main character Phillie is a joy to read about. I recommend this book to all mature audiences.

Murder in Lisbon
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (March, 2000)
Author: Sidney F. Davis
Average review score:

A Must Read Thriller
One of the best novels I have read in a long time. It is a fast paced thriller that is hard to put down. The suspense, the plot, the charcters, and the historical background are well developed. As a World War II veteran I appreciated the author's realistic descriptions of the mood and sentiments of the 1940 era. It certainly would be terrific movie material and I highly recommend this book.

Sidney Davis hits Homerun
As a retired airline Captain I usually approach aviation fiction with skeptiscism, but I was convinced Davis had hit a home run halfway through Chapter One. His flying scenes are the best I've read in a long time. His characters are well developed, a rarity in current fiction. The heroes have warts, too. The plot is simply terrific and I hope Davis is writing another book on aviation. I second the motion of the first reviewer that the book be made into a movie.

A Masterpiece in Suspense
This book starts with the beginning of World War II. It gives you the same feeling as when you read Winds of War. It is excitement from the start. The detailed descriptions of Lisbon, of the inner workings of the Lisbon police department and of the flying clipper are exquisite. This book takes you from each suspenseful moment to the completely unexpected. For a pilot, the flight scenes bring back fond memories. The Author obviously has researched his subject in great detail. As I approached the end of the book, I simply couldn't put it down. I knew how I wanted it to end, but I had no idea how Sid Davis would take us there. Definitely, a book for Hollywood!

The Music of Man
Published in Hardcover by Book Sales (November, 1984)
Authors: Yehudi Menuhin and Curtis W. Davis
Average review score:

the book again please and a VHS too..
Yes, this is one of the best books on music I have ever read, and would love to give it as a gift to others. PLEASE can't we have reprints and a video version too. I believe Canadian TV have the original.

Reprints Requested
I wrote a review of this book months ago. I felt that it was a good review because its message was very positive and indicated that this book should be reprinted. Just because a book is remote in terms of subject matter and its buying public is not hightech or highvolume, does not mean that the book is meaningless. This is one of the most valuable volumes I have ever read and I would like for the on-line world to know how excellent it really is: THE MUSIC OF MAN by Yehudi Mehuhin

Best book of music
This is the best. Because, music is sense and humor. This book has two of them. Menuhin was the best violonist of 20th Century. And when I saw the program's name on TV in 1979 I said "Hey this is wonderful" And I watched it every week as being happy. Now, 20 years later I want to buy and read those in this book...

My Journey into Alzheimer's Disease
Published in Paperback by Tyndale House Publishers (April, 1989)
Author: Robert Davis
Average review score:

An Adult Child's Experience
This book is so insightful, especially the portions written by his wife, Betty. My father-in-law is in the final stages of this disease. I wish that I had discovered this book when he was going through the first phases. It would have helped us be even more understanding. ( We patiently listend to the same story over and over. In Bob's and Betty's words, they tell why.) My mother-in-law cried as she read the book. I urge anyone family that is experiencing this to purchase this book! An excellent resource!

My Journey into Alzheimers by Robert Davis
I found the book "My Journey into Alzheimers" to be exceptionally informative and inspirational. To read a book on Alzheimers Disease, written from the perspective of one afflicted is unique. Robert Davis has given his readers a look into the day to day battle against a much dreaded illness. This book is very thought provoking and touching. As a christian my self I was inspired by his continued relationship with God,despite his disease. I also found it very beneficial to gain insight into how a person with Alzheimers thinks and feels, and how this changes as the disease progresses. The practical advice on how to initiate a conversation with someone who has Alzheimers is helpful. No doubt, many readers will be thankful for the courage and dedication Robert Davis and his wife have put into this book. Having been permitted into their lives during this most difficult time is truly remarkable. However I find myself wondering how things are with Mr.and Mrs. Davis now. Is there perhaps a website, or e mail address where I can write? Thank you once again for this excellent resource. Debbie

My Journey into Alzheimer's Disease
This was truly an insightful look into the thoughts and feelings of a man facing Alzheimer's Disease. Robert Davis was a very intelligent, successful minister in one of the largest churches in Miami when he tragically had to face the fact that Alzheimer's was robbing him of his ability to function. His wife's love and his faith in God are the elements that keep him going. Davis writes "Many Christians have found that when life completely tumbles in, when they are without strength or any hope or help for themselves, or when their minds become too tangled to even hold thoughts, that God overrules the circumstances and that Christ comes to minister to them at the very point of their need."

This book is a great help to those suffering from the beginning stages of Alzheimer'a Disease, or for family and friends of a loved one with Alzheimer's. I guarantee you will find this book inspirational.

The Naturally Sweet Baker : 150 Decadent Desserts Made With Honey, Maple Syrup, and Other Delicious Alternatives to Refined Sugar
Published in Hardcover by Hungry Minds, Inc (06 November, 1997)
Author: Carrie Davis
Average review score:

Naturally sweet
This book gives information about alternatives to refined sugar. It is a very good book with excellent recipes (from simple cookies -the chocolate shortbread sounds terrific- to cakes and ice creams. But, something important, be ready to buy or order (there is a page of sources. Fantastic!) "Sucanat" or "maple sugar", "rice syrup" or "maple syrup". Because if you do not have these on hand, you cannot try the recipes. There are also some recipes with honey, an ingredient that is easier to find.

Easy to Enjoy
Most of the cookbooks I own come with the appliances I buy. This book is an exception. I enjoy the flavours of maple syrup and honey and was delighted to find a cookbook that caters to my tastes. I find the recipes easy to follow. I'm not an expert in the kitchen. Beside each recipe is a margin where the author has put some notes and room enough for you to enter any notes you may want to as well. At the end of some recipes are tips that give you a clue as to what to expect if you've never had the experience of, "Carmelizing Maple Syrup", for example. Another tip I really liked was the suggestion of using a variety of apples in my apple pie. That was a tasty surprise. The Pastry recipe, which she credits to Julia Child, is the best I've ever had. If you are a chocolate lover, try Aunt Josephine's Chocolate Cake. It's heavenly. I find the author's approach to the reader to be like a personal tutorial. It's like she's right there watching over and encouraging your every move. I haven't tried all the recipes yet but I'm getting a little braver as I tackle the standards: date squares, brownies, pies, and cookies. Thank you Carrie Davis for the "Naturally Sweet Baker".

Yummmy!
As a professed chocoholic I was prepared only to savour the chocolate recipes in Carrie Davis's The Naturally Sweet Baker. But to be fair, I didn't restrict myself to those, although there is an ample supply. And I have to admit, that Davis's Maple Mousse is just about the nicest dessert I have ever made or eaten! And my guests raved about it too.

Of course, Aunt Josephine's Chocolate Cake was a real winner as well. This cookbook is a great resource for information about alternatives to refined sugar in your baking, and an absolute treasure trove of recipes. Check it out for some fun, adventure and delicious treats!

Night Game
Published in Paperback by Kensington Pub Corp (Mass Market) (April, 1996)
Author: Carol Davis Luce
Average review score:

On The Edge of My Seat!
Casey Atwood makes a living spotting cheats in casinos. Hired by the wife of a hotel casino owner, her job is to look into shady dealings at the casino. As she begins work, bodies start to show up. The deeper she delves into the problems of the establishment, the closer a mysterious enemy comes to killing her. To add to her troubles, she falls in love with the owner of the casino but cannot touch him because he is married. She has little time for romance though as the enemy becomes bolder and more aggressive. The climax is a thrill a minute.

This is Carol's fifth novel and it is definitely one of her best. I could hardly put it down. If you are looking for a great read and enough mystery and suspense to keep you guessing right to the end, then this is the book for you.

one of the finest mysteries i've read in a long time

A story that touches you heart. A reading that is hard to put down. From the most difficult of times to being high on life and love. A story of true devotion and companionship.

Sensational Saga
I couldn't put it down! This story of Richard and his loving wife touched my heart. I glimpsed the roller coaster of emotions, trials, and victories that must be experienced by parapalegics and those who are close to them. This novel is expertly penned with no sugarcoating. At the conclusion I felt inspired. The joy is in the journey! It is a must read.

Superbly uplifting & elegantly told... Couldn't put it down!
What a magnificent story this is! It is indeed a real page-turner, four hankie tear-jerker! I will not soon forget Richard, his courage and tenacity are inspirational. "Not Yet My Love" is indeed a masterpiece. A joy to read. Brilliant! I love it!

The Nursing Home Handbook: A Guide to Living Well
Published in Paperback by Adams Media Corporation (February, 2000)
Author: Ruth Davis
Average review score:

A Thorough Overview
The Nursing Home Handbook is thorough and well written. It answered nearly all my questions and many I never thought of. My remaining questions are: Which are the best places? Are they easily accessible? How much do they cost? I still have to do research, but this book provides criteria by which to judge.

I recommend this book for anyone who needs help choosing a nursing home or dealing with one already chosen. It may also help you decide, as I did, that a nursing home is not the right choice at this time.

a wonderful simple, concise and easy to read resource
This book is a quick read, but is stuffed full of good information and practical tidbits. I read it in just a few hours and learned a tremendous lot. I especially liked the boxed text in the margins with interesting little factoids and suggestions.

For instance, when I asked to read my loved one's medical chart I was told, "okay, but hurry. I don't want anyone to see that I'm letting you do this." In Davis' book, she states that we have a legal right to read our own medical charts. Her book is full of this type of "been there, done that" advice.

The next to last chapter, which gives some information on hospice and practical advice on how to sit by the bedside when it's time for your loved one to leave this world, was very well written and is alone worth the price of this book.

I've read many of these books and this is one of the few that I'd highly recommend.

This book DOES make life easier.
Ruth Davis writes with humor and great practicality on a topic that I find uncomfortable and somewhat overwhelming. She provides information on all aspects of nursing home care --from finding the right setting, to coping with details of day to day life in a home, to the last moments. I love her use of sidebars, little snippits of advice, often filled with humor and always packed with common sense. I would recommend this book to anyone facing the problem of long term care for self or loved one.
